LaRue, Cardinals rough up Pirates
Baseball Betting Lines
08/21/2008 -
St. Louis, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason LaRue hit a two-run homer, doubled
and finished with three runs batted in, as St. Louis blasted Pittsburgh, 11-2,
in the finale of a two-game set with the Pirates.
Rick Ankiel also had a two-run blast, while Skip Schumaker went 3-for-4 with a
walk and run batted in for the Cardinals, who split the series and ended a
two-game slide.
Todd Wellemeyer (11-4) allowed both Pirates runs on five hits and a pair of
walks in five innings of work. He also struck out five on the way to winning
his third consecutive start and fourth straight decision.
Jason Davis (1-3) was rocked for eight runs -- six earned -- on nine hits and
three walks in just 3 2/3 frames to absorb the loss. Craig Hansen allowed
three runs on three hits in two innings of relief for Pittsburgh, which had a
two-game win streak snapped.
Ryan Doumit provided all the offense for the Pirates with a two-run homer, and
finished 3-for-4 with a double.
The Cardinals put two runs on the board in the second inning. With runners in
scoring position and no outs, LaRue hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and
Wellemeyer followed with a base hit to right that plated another run. Doumit's
two-run blast in the top of the third tied the game at two.
But in the home third, the Cardinals started to pull away. Schumaker led off
with a single and Ryan Ludwick followed with a double. Albert Pujols drove in
one run with a ground out to short, bringing up Ankiel, who crushed the ball
beyond the center-field wall to put St. Louis ahead 5-2.
The Cardinals added three more runs in the fourth. With runners on the corners
and one out, Schumaker slapped a single to right, plating one run and again
placing runners on the corners. Ludwick hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-2
game.
Pujols then walked, and after a wild pitch let the runners advance, Ankiel
worked a free pass to load the bases. Troy Glaus walked to force a runner in,
ending Davis' day on the mound. Romulo Sanchez entered and got Felipe Lopez to
ground out, but not before St. Louis had a six-run lead.
Sanchez worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, but Hansen took the mound in
the seventh. He gave up a one-out single to Glaus, and two batters later,
LaRue slugged the ball to left for the two-run homer and a 10-2 Cardinals
lead.
Pujols completed the scoring in the eighth with an RBI double, plating
Schumaker.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at Sportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.

Big Ten Conference odds
Teams that should be in: Michigan State, Indiana
Work left to do: Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa
Behind the big two, the pecking order might be in a bit of flux. Has Michigan State passed Indiana after handling the Hoosiers in East Lansing? Where is Illinois in that mix? What looked like a four-big league last week could be morphing into five -- and even six is not unthinkable at this point if everything breaks right.
Should be in:
Michigan State [21-8 (8-6), RPI: 20, SOS: 15] The Spartans made it four-for-four on the homestand, a gigantic accomplishment that leaves them in extremely good shape. MSU is only 1-6 on the road and is at Michigan and at Wisconsin to close things out, meaning the date with the Wolverines on Tuesday looms very, very large. Beating Texas early will hold up well, as will the rout of Bradley and the win over BYU, but will 8-8 be enough? It very well could be, as the computer numbers are good, but why chance it?
Indiana [18-9 (8-6), RPI: 24, SOS: 32] Hmm ... good thing the last two are at Northwestern and home to Penn State, because IU might want to get both to feel completely safe after dropping its third in the last four, fading after halftime at Michigan State. Who knew the best nonconference win would be over Southern Illinois, which is a gift that keeps on giving for the Hoosiers. The win over Wisconsin also looks good on the mantel.
Work left to do:
Illinois [21-9 (9-6), RPI: 31, SOS: 25] A good performance at Penn State leaves the Illini in pretty good shape. Can they go to Iowa and take care of business to really look on their way? That's a huge game, as there is a possible cluster of teams that will end at 9-7. Illinois beat Bradley, but has lost to Xavier. A 9-7 mark and a semifinals trip in Chicago could be enough with the computer profile hanging in there, but it would be better not to mess around, clinching at least a tie for third.
Purdue [18-10 (7-7), RPI: 47, SOS: 28] Couldn't get it done at Iowa, but did win at Northwestern to put 9-7 squarely in sight. Where does that leave the Boilermakers, though? Even if they beat Minnesota and Northwestern at home, that won't help the computer numbers. Nonconference wins over Virginia, DePaul and Oklahoma are solid, but not spectacular. The Boilers very well might need an upset in the B10 quarters to have a legit claim.
Michigan [19-10 (7-7), RPI: 55, SOS: 53] Well, Michigan did what it needed to do, winning at Minnesota to take control of its fate. The Wolverines have Michigan State and an already-wrapped-up-the-league Ohio State at home to close, so the chances are there. Win both and we can talk. There is no marquee win yet in the profile, and the Wolverines were splattered in several games against name opponents. A mediocre computer profile fueled by a lack of road wins isn't helping, either.
Iowa [16-12 (8-6), RPI: 80, SOS: 64] For the sake of being complete, we'll add Iowa, this season's Stanford. It's plausible that the Hawkeyes could get to 10-6 (at Penn State, vs. Illinois left), but where does that leave them after a gruesome nonconference performance where the best win was over ... Toledo? Iowa State? Cornell?? If they get to 10-6, we can start to look at what they need to do in the B10 tourney, although my gut sense is that they would need to make the final and have knocked off Ohio State or Wisconsin on the way to have any real claim.
